Hearing that Elvanse is "out of stock" can be unsettling, especially if you or your child rely on it to get through the school or working day. You might be wondering whether there is a national shortage, whether your strength is affected, and what happens if your pharmacy cannot fill your next prescription.
The good news is that a pharmacy saying "we do not have it today" does not always mean there is a nationwide shortage. Stock can vary between pharmacies, between strengths and from week to week. This guide explains the current official position, the difference between national and local supply problems, and the practical steps you can take.
Quick answer: is there an Elvanse shortage in the UK?
As of 9 October 2026, we have not found any public announcement from the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) or the NHS confirming a current nationwide shortage of Elvanse (lisdexamfetamine). However, availability may vary between pharmacies and strengths, and some patients may experience local stock issues. Detailed shortage alerts are sent to healthcare professionals rather than published for the public, so your pharmacist or prescriber can give you the most up-to-date picture.
| National supply shortage | A supply problem affecting the whole UK market, usually reported by the manufacturer to DHSC and managed nationally. |
| Local stock shortage | An individual pharmacy, or pharmacies in one area, temporarily has no stock, even though the medicine is still available nationally. |
| Strength-specific shortage | One strength (for example 50mg) is harder to get, while other strengths are available. |
| Wholesaler or distribution issue | The medicine exists in the UK supply chain, but a pharmacy's usual wholesaler cannot deliver it straight away. |
| Medicine Supply Notification (MSN) | Official shortage guidance issued by DHSC and NHS England to healthcare professionals, not to the public. |
| Serious Shortage Protocol (SSP) | A protocol published by the NHS Business Services Authority that can allow pharmacies to supply an alternative medicine or quantity during a shortage. |
As of 9 October 2026, we have not found a current official public statement confirming a nationwide Elvanse shortage. We checked GOV.UK, NHS and NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service (SPS) sources on that date.
Here is what the official sources do show:
So your pharmacist or prescriber may know about a supply issue before it appears anywhere public. If your strength is unavailable, ask whether it is a local stock problem or a wider supply issue. Medicine availability can change quickly, and we will update this page if the official position changes.
Supply information checked: 9 October 2026. Sources: GOV.UK "Medicine supply management" (updated 5 August 2026), GOV.UK "Medicines that cannot be parallel exported from the UK" (list dated 29 September 2026), GOV.UK "Managing a robust and resilient supply of medicines" (August 2025).
Medicine supply problems can have several causes. We are not aware of any official statement naming the cause of a current Elvanse supply problem, so the points below are general explanations of why any medicine can be hard to find, not a statement about Elvanse today.
Elvanse capsules are made in six strengths: 20mg, 30mg, 40mg, 50mg, 60mg and 70mg. The electronic Medicines Compendium (emc) lists all six as current products from Takeda UK Ltd.
As of 9 October 2026, we have not found a public official source naming any specific Elvanse strength as being in national shortage. That includes the 30mg, 40mg, 50mg, 60mg and 70mg capsules.
Even so, availability can differ:
If your pharmacy cannot get your strength, do not make up your dose with different capsules yourself. Only your prescriber can decide whether a different combination of strengths is suitable, and it would need a new prescription. If your packaging has changed from "Elvanse Adult" to "Elvanse", that is not a sign of a shortage: the emc lists Elvanse Adult as discontinued, and both contain the same active ingredient. See our guide to Elvanse (lisdexamfetamine) for more.
Stay calm, speak to the pharmacy first, then contact your prescriber if the prescription cannot be supplied in time. Here is a step-by-step approach:
Please do not try to build up a stockpile at home. Elvanse is a controlled drug, prescriptions are usually limited to around 30 days' supply, and holding extra stock can make supply harder for other patients.
In general, yes. If your usual pharmacy cannot supply your prescription, you can usually ask for it to be dispensed elsewhere. How this works depends on the type of prescription:
Remember that a controlled drug prescription has a limited validity period, usually 28 days from the date on the prescription. Moving it to another pharmacy does not extend this. If you use a private clinic, our page on private ADHD medication services explains how clinic prescriptions are handled.
Speak to your prescriber or pharmacist. If your prescribed Elvanse strength cannot be supplied, your prescriber can review your situation.
Where clinically appropriate, a prescriber may consider options such as a different combination of strengths or, in some cases, a different ADHD medicine. Other ADHD medicines used in the UK include methylphenidate (such as Concerta XL), dexamfetamine (such as Amfexa), atomoxetine and guanfacine. These medicines are not interchangeable, and any change is a clinical decision for your prescriber.
As an example of how this is handled, NHS Specialist Pharmacy Service guidance on switching between modified-release methylphenidate brands during supply disruption advises prescribers to discuss any switch with the patient, and to reassure them that it will be temporary and based on clinically equivalent products.
Do not change your medicine, dose or treatment schedule yourself.
No. Do not stop taking Elvanse or change how you take it without speaking to your prescriber or pharmacist first. The Elvanse Patient Information Leaflet advises not to stop taking the medicine without talking to your doctor, because ADHD symptoms can come back.
If you are about to run out, contact your prescriber as early as possible and ask your pharmacist for advice in the meantime. Do not split doses or borrow someone else's medicine. Your prescriber knows your history and is the right person to make decisions about your treatment.
We are not aware of one official, real-time national stock checker that shows Elvanse availability at every UK pharmacy.
Official shortage information goes mainly to healthcare professionals, not the public. Websites and social media posts claiming to show "live" stock may be out of date or wrong, and individual pharmacy stock can change within hours.
The most reliable way to check is to contact a pharmacy directly with your exact medicine and strength. If you live in or near London, our article on where to find Elvanse and Vyvanse in London explains what to ask when you call.
Pharmazon HomeCare is a GPhC-registered UK specialist homecare pharmacy, part of the Excelsior Health group. We dispense prescriptions and deliver medicines to patients across the UK. Our London premises are in the Harley Street Medical Area. We work with patients, GPs, psychiatrists and private ADHD clinics. You can read how our ADHD online pharmacy works.
For ADHD patients, this includes:
We cannot guarantee that any Elvanse strength will be in stock. What we can do is check your prescription and current availability, and tell you clearly where things stand, so you can plan with your prescriber.
If you have a valid prescription and need help with your ADHD medication supply, contact the Pharmazon HomeCare pharmacy team to discuss your prescription and current availability.
A little planning can make a supply problem much easier to manage:

Ask your pharmacy when stock is expected and whether another pharmacy can help. If the prescription cannot be supplied before you run out, contact your prescriber. Do not change your dose or buy medicine online without a prescription.
Usually, yes. You can usually change your nominated pharmacy for an NHS electronic prescription, or take an undispensed paper prescription to another pharmacy. Controlled drug prescriptions are usually valid for 28 days from the date on the prescription.
Your prescriber may consider a different strength combination or a different ADHD medicine if it is clinically appropriate. This is their decision, based on your health and history. Do not switch medicines yourself.
Do not stop or change your treatment without speaking to your prescriber or pharmacist. Contact them as early as possible if you are about to run out.
